Експериментальна та клінічна фізіологія і біохіміяThe problem of pathology of the pancreas has become especially important since the second half of the nineteenth century. The number of pancreatic cases has increased notedly since that period.
The role of a nurse caring about patients with pancreatic pathology is obvious and extremely important. This is because a nurse is an active participant of the main processes in the medical clinic – hospitalization, transportation of patients, preparation for diagnostic and therapeutic manipulations, monitoring of a patient’s condition, fulfillment of a doctor’s prescriptions, etc. The nursing process in the pathology of pancreas consists of five stages:
I stage – nursing examination, including a patient’s complaints, anamnestic data and objective assessment of his condition.
II stage – nursing diagnostics. It is based on a patient’s complaints, feelings and is the basis for determining how to take care of a patient. Depending on a patient’s problems, ways how to relieve the pathological condition are searched; the risks associated with the disease are eliminated; the urgent control and safety measures are analyzed.
ІІІ stage – planning of nursing interventions. It includes: preparation of a patient and taking the biological material for laboratory tests; preparation of a patient for the instrumental methods of examination; care and following-up of a patient in his conservative treatment; a patient’s care in the preoperative and postoperative periods; solutions to a patient’s current problems; fulfillment of the doctor’s prescriptions; solutions to concomitant problems and needs of a patient; education of a patient and his/her relatives about principles of nutrition; training of a patient to take care of himself.
IV stage – implementation of a plan of nursing interventions. It involves a patient’s preparation for a general, biochemical blood test; general urine analysis; instrumental examination methods (FGDS, ultrasound, computed tomography, video laparoscopy); fulfillment of a doctor’s prescriptions.
V stage – assessing and correcting the outcomes of nursing interventions. The evaluation consists of finding out successful clinical course of the disease, improving a patient’s well-being and objective state, identifying new patient’s problems (possible complications) with appropriate correction of nursing interventions.
Due to the results of the study it is possible to suggest that the early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, clarification of the accuracy of a doctor’s prescriptions, qualified nursing care can reduce a patient’s stay at hospital and decrease the mortality rate among pancreatic patients. The current practice of care about patients with pancreatic diseases in Ukraine has not well-structured yet. Many healthcare professionals use old protocols and guidelines. Medical practices require updated guidelines and algorithms, built on the world-wide experience and evidence-based medicine.
The article presents the algorithm of providing medical care to patients with pathology of pancreas from the moment of hospitalization to the emergency care, if necessary. The topic of nursing care for patients with pancreatic diseases is not well studied and needs further research.
