Elastic plastic application in prosthetic dentistry: experimental and clinical aspects

LESHCHUK Ye.
Abstract

In orthopedic dental practice to improve functional ability of full dentures with acrylic plastic, the technology of manufacturing prosthetic designs using elastic plastic is used. This work is devoted to the experimental and clinical substantiation of application of various types of modern elastic plastic to increase the efficiency of prosthetic treatment. Mechanical properties of the combination of basic (ftoraks) and elastic (ПМ-C and Ufi Gel P) plastics have been studied in the research, macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of contact areas between elastic and basic plastics have been investigated. Investigation of biochemical properties of saliva (protein, glucose, salivation rate, pH of saliva) in patients in the process of making prosthetic appliances with different types of overdentures has been carried out. It was revealed that in patients with and without elastic plastic biochemical properties of saliva are different. In an adaptation period rapid normalization of biochemical parameters of saliva occurs in patients whose prosthetic dentures done with elastic lining.

Evaluation of functional suitability of dentures with and without elastic plastic revealed that dentures with elastic lining are more resistant to exertion; adaptation and restoration of dental system functions are quicker.

Analysis of the strength of the connection of elastic plastic with an acrylic base revealed that the bond strength of elastic area (bonding) of models manufactured with Ufi Gel P with the base plastic is almost 4 times higher for models made of ПМ-С. The plasticity during stretching to break of elastic plastic Ufi Gel P is 2 times higher compared with elastic plastic ПМ-С.

The research of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of contact areas between the elastic plastics ПМ-С and Ufi Gel P and the base plastic found that the structure of elastic plastics ПМ-С is tighter than globular structure Ufi Gel P. The marginal fit of elastic plastic Ufi Gel P to the basic plastic models were investigated in dense, edge cracks were not formed, uniformity microstructure of elastic plastic was found.

The number of dentures correction in patients who were made removable liner with a flexible structure averaged 1.8 ± 1.2, while in patients whose dentures are made only from acrylic plastic – 4.2 ± 1.8. Grinding food was up to 39 % higher in patients using dentures lined by Ufi Gel P and to 34 % higher in patients with prosthetic elastic lining ПМ-С, compared with patients who used dentures without the elastic plastic.

The investigation of dynamometric parameters showed significantly better results in patients who used dentures with elastic lining, namely, tension of soft tissues is reduced faster, the adaptation to dentures is faster and chewing activity is higher.

Based on the research results it was proved that dentures made with elastic lining, are better mastered by patients, irritation subsides faster, as well as there is full and fast restoration of functional activity of teeth-jaw system which leads to improving the quality of dental prosthetics.

This work helps to increase the efficiency of prosthetic treatment of patients with complete teeth loss, and to improve manufacturing methods of prosthetic appliances with and without elastic plastic in different clinical cases.
